Each year, millions of people visit London, and Stratford on Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare.
But there are many other parts of Britain to consider. The United Kingdom is actually four countries - England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Each is divided into smaller ’County’ areas. Many have their own culture and identity going back over hundreds of years. There are many ancient historical cities - York and Chester still with their old city walls, Lincoln and Bath, and Oxford and Cambridge famous for their ancient universities. Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool and Bristol are all world-class cities with theatres, art galleries, and museums. If you like green countryside, there is much to choose from. The ’West Country’ - Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall counties - is full of beautiful small villages, old cottages with ’thatched’ (straw) roofs, ancient churches and gentle green hills.
The ’Lake District’ with its mountains and lakes draws millions of visitors. They come to see a beautiful mixture of lakes, mountains, and places connected with the poet William Wordsworth, and the children’s writer Beatrix Potter.
